What is A Bond Fund?

In the financial world of investing, a bond fund is a brand of mutual fund that is heavily investing in bonds as its main investment asset.  A regular mutual fund by contrast invests in many companies, other funds, some bonds, and other commodities.  The combination can be any of the above with many mutual funds providing emphasis on a certain market sector or financial instrument.  A bond fund works the same way however its key investments are always in bonds.  Bonds are instruments of debts and can be issued by a government entity, the norm, or even a corporation.  Bonds dictate that if the investor buys one, the issuer will agree to pay a specific amount of interest on the bond until it matures.  In this way one is essentially loaning the issuer the money as an investment in exchange for their money back at a future date and some interest along the way.  A bond fund simply joins a group of likeminded investors and purchases bonds in volume.  A bond fund is managed by a fund manager who will make the actual decisions and what bonds to buy, sell and when.  In this way many people can be involved in bond fund investing however they can let a professional manage the account to maximize profits.

Bond Fund Advantages

Bond fund investing has become an increasingly attractive investment strategy in recent years.  Bonds have always been important aspects of the trading sector as they are seen as relatively safe investments, especially those issued by governments.  The advantages to a bond fund instead of one just buying up corporate and government issued bonds on their own is both simplicity and security.  The simplicity in bond fund investing is that the bond fund itself handles the sometimes mathematically complex system of interest, maturity dates, secondary bond markets, etc.  The bond fund investor only sees the value of his or her share in the bond fund.  Additionally bond funds, while certainly not lottery tickets, offer safe and steady returns over the years with little risk.
