How to Invest in Gold Mutual Funds? Investing in gold mutual funds can mean utilizing one of several methods to base a mutual fund investment in the precious metal gold. These different gold fund investment vehicles, while they employ various methods, all entail the same investment strategy: investing in precious metals, gold in this case, via a mutual fund that will in turn buy gold directly, purchase gold options, invest in gold mining operations, or invest in a gold based corporation such as a distributor. All these types of gold funds qualify as mutual funds, but their investment strategies are varied. The underlying investment principle is the same however, invest money in a precious metal with hopes that its value will increase in the world market, thus increasing the value of gold mutual fund shares. In tumultuous times such as depressed markets or in times of high currency inflation, many investors and funds will look to gold as a stabilizing factor. Gold and backing gold funds tend to increase in general over time, but in times of market panic can increase dramatically.

Types Of Common Gold Funds

Gold mutual funds come in many varieties. Each category of gold mutual funds operates differently and therefore can lend itself both to increased benefits and profits, but also to disadvantages. While there is no best option for gold funds that predictably beats the pack, the following gold funds are listed in order of their popularity and volume investment:

Gold Exchange Traded Funds: commonly referred to only as “GETFs” these funds invest in gold by purchasing stocks in gold mining companies, gold distributors, and while not exclusively, by purchasing real gold bullion. A benefit to Gold Exchange Traded Funds is that they can profit via multiple avenues when the price of gold is on the rise.

Gold Funds: similar to Gold Exchange Traded Funds, however these funds, sometimes referred to as Gold Bullion Securities, invest just in real gold amounts. The gold is stored in a bank or other secure location, while the fund can make profits trading real amounts of gold on the open commodities markets.
