What Is The Largest Mutual Fund?
What is the Largest Mutual Fund? The largest mutual fund is estimated at this time to be the Vanguard 500. This mutual fund is maintained and owned by the Vanguard Group, a company which has been mutual fund investing since the 1970’s. One of the primary reasons this particular mutual fund is renowned as the biggest mutual fund, is that it is considered a safer investment than some of the more aggressive mutual funds. The Vanguard 500 is an index fund. An index fund in mutual fund investing aims to mimic the earning an index such as in the case of the Vanguard, the Standard and Poor’s 500, by buying assets in similar proportions. The reasoning behind this type of mutual fund investing was first conceived by the founder of Vanguard, John C. Boogle. Boogle noticed historically that the majority of mutual funds failed to reach the same gains as the major indexes. Since one cannot simply invest in an index, the idea was born to create an index mutual fund that would trade in the same companies at the same proportions the S&P 500 Index itself. The gamble paid off and not only does the Vanguard 500 consistently return good earnings to its many investors; it has now grown to the largest mutual fund in the world with assets over $86 billion.
Large Mutual Funds
Aside from the Vanguard there are also several other funds which round out the list of the largest mutual funds around. These funds, while not the biggest mutual fund in dollar value, can and do have more investors in many instances. While important to have a mutual fund that has some buying power, meaning size and money, a large mutual fund is not always a guarantee of return on investment. Some of the other biggest mutual funds are:
FDRXX Fidelity Cash Reserves
VMMXX Vanguard Prime
CJPXX JPMorgan: Prime MM
SPDR S&P 500 ETF
VTSMX Vanguard TSMX
AGTHX American Funds Growth
