How Does After Hours Trading Work?

Just a few years ago, after hours trading become an acceptable way for stock traders to trade stocks after business hours were over. In the United States, stock traders used to operate between 9AM and 5PM, Monday through Friday. However, after hours trading allows these same traders to execute trades between brokers after normal business hours. After hours trading works by allowing individuals to continue stock trading amongst themselves. Typically, after hours trading is only permitted to be used by certain individual stock traders, particularly those with high net worths. But after hours trading has become more accepted by other individuals now, too.

How After Hours Trading Works

Though the process is slightly more complicated than this, after hours trading works something like this: If you are willing to use stock trading after hours, you can propose an amount that you’d like to buy or sell a certain stock for during after hours trading times. After hours trading occurs when another stock trader agrees to buy or sell the stock you have or want for an agreed-upon price. This price is usually not the actual price of the stock according to the United States stock market. Rather, it may be above or below market value depending on news that occurs outside of normal business hours. By using after hours trading, you can buy or sell stocks using this new after hours. Because the way the world receives news has changed so drastically in the last few years, stock trading has changed, too.

Using After Hours Trading

Currently, not everyone can use after hours trading. And after hours trading is a method that is not fool-proof. You could lose money using after hours trading simply because you’re guessing about the price of a certain stock rather than knowing what it is. But after hours trading is a great way to stay on top of the stock market. After hours trading works to help you stay educated about stocks even after the stock market closes.
