What Is Stock Trading?

Stock trading can mean many things, but in its most basic form it is the purchase of shares of a publicly traded company, mutual fund or other market traded financial instrument.  Stock trading, investing in the stock market can take many forms.  Most common stock trading is when a person buying stocks purchases shares in a publicly traded company.  In this way the investor, or stock buyer, is essentially buying ownership in the company.  The purpose of stock trading is to make money.  The person investing in the stock market purchases the shares hoping that the company will be profitable, make money, and pay dividends while increasing their share price.  In this way the stock or share purchased becomes more valuable and the stock investment increases for the investor.  Stock trading does not need to be complicated.  While there are complexities in the vast expanses of the many stock markets, for the typical investor, stock trading is a simple and secure way to make an investment.

How Stocks Trade

Stocks trade based on buy and sell orders of investors and stockbrokers.  To purchase a stock one simply looks for a stock they are interested in, decides the quantity they wish to buy, and makes the purchases.  Stocks are nowadays almost exclusively traded electronically using ECNs (Exchange Communication Networks).  These ECNs automate the process and in moments one is trading, meaning owning stock.   These same systems also will execute a stock sell when one is desired.  The sale is typically grouped together with others wishing to sell and a buyer is found.  The money from a sale or purchase of a stock is typically funded by an account with an online stockbroker or retail stockbroker.

How To Start Stock Trading

To get started stock trading is now more simple than ever.  Simply locate an online stockbroker or retail broker from the yellow pages or internet.  You will have to open an account and fund it.  This is usually done via a wire transfer from your bank.  Once an account is funding trading stocks is simple.  Just decide what stock you want and start buying.  If using an online stockbroker service this can be as simple as clicking on the stock symbol for the stock or fund share you want and selecting buy.  Enter the quantity requested, click to confirm your purchase and you are trading stocks in minutes.
